Trophy swims away from Big Fish at San Lameer Country Club

One really bad hole cost the past champion this time around.

THE San Lameer Open, played last Sunday, was won by James du Preez junior, ranked fifth in the country, of Pretoria Country Club.

He plays off a +4 and was a member of Gauteng North’s IPT team this year.

He successfully defended his title, keeping damage to a limit in the gale that whipped across the coast and wreaked havoc with scores.

The lanky fellow, who is probably about as tall as Protea cricketer Morne Morkel, and hits the ball a country mile, had rounds of 74 and 73.

Southbroom Golf Club’s Gavin Sole, who has won this title six times, was in second place on 72 and 78. “I started with a double on the1st and then made 7 on the 4th (a par three) in the afternoon, otherwise played well,” he said.

Pieter Boshoff from Bronkhorstspruit Golf Club was third on 73 and 79, followed by Jason Ackerman (Silver Lakes Country Club/Southbroom Golf Club) on 77 and 83.

There was a tie for fifth place, shared by Margate Country Club veteran Douglas Sima (80 and 81), Ernest Kemm (81 and 80), Port Shepstone CC’s Graham Fabricius (84 and 77) and Kokstad Golf Club’s Sean Baker (74 and 87).

“I started well but the putter gave me hassles and just got worse. Not one birdie,” said a slightly-less-than-amused Baker.

Robert Mavundla of Margate Country Club was ninth on 79 and 85.

As for the rest of the field, the wind sent their scores soaring. “The wind was crazy, and was tougher in the afternoon,” said Fabricius, who was pretty pleased with his afternoon effort.
