Update: Crash kills three pensioners – man arrested

He was released on bail pending his next court appearance.

UPDATE:

SANELE Goodenough Sithole (31),  the driver of the sedan involved in the crash which left three elderly people dead, was arrested and faces charges of drunken driving and three counts of culpable homicide.

He was released on bail of R1 000 and will next appear in court on December 8.

THREE people died and 13 were injured in an accident near Sawoti, inland from Umzinto, earlier today.

A bakkie was transporting mostly elderly people to collect their grants and pension pay-outs when it collided with a car on the R612. It left the road and overturned before coming to a standstill in a sugarcane field.

Paramedics from the KZN Emergency Medical Services and the Road Traffic Inspectorate and SAPS officers responded and found three dead at the scene.

According to a report, the dead are an elderly man and two elderly women. Thirteen patients were treated for injuries, which ranged from serious to minor. Once the patients were stabilised they were transported to local health institutions for further medical care.
