Police dog Heeva steals the show

To avoid a tragedy always ensure that your children are under your immediate protection.

SEARCH and rescue dog, Heeva, a four year old Belgian shepherd, recently showed off her talent and skills to a group of young children.

Heeva and her handler, Sergeant Rommel da Rosa from Port Shepstone K9 unit,  along with Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid from Ugu cluster Corporate Communication, visited the Starting Blocks crèche in Izotsha recently.

Sgt da Rosa enchanted the young ones with his stories of missing children and how he and Heeva rescue them when called out to conduct a search.

To prove this, Heeva was given the task of searching for a ‘missing’ teacher who volunteered to hide behind one of the buildings. Very soon, after eagerly following the scent of the teacher, Heeva located her and brought her back to the excited pupils.

The children also received SAPS colouring books.

Sergeant da Rosa and Heeva have successfully retrieved many drowning victims from the water and located missing persons since they started working together.

Lt-Col Wiid said that, with the summer holidays almost here, parents and carers are cautioned to be extra vigilant when visiting beaches, shopping malls or when going camping. “Always ensure that young children are under your immediate protection and where you can see them at all times,” she said.

“Tragedies such as drownings and children disappearing can be avoided if children are properly taken care of,” she added.
