MEC Pillay and HCM scoop top awards

The awards were presented at the national Govan Mbeki Awards ceremony held in Cape Town.

LOCAL son of the South Coast Ravi Pillay is again setting the national stage alight.

The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works scooped the top performing province award at the national Govan Mbeki Awards, hosted by Human Settlements Minister, Lindiwe Sisulu.

The awards were made at a glittering ceremony at the Cape Town International Convention Centre recently.

MEC Pillay’s department romped home with six awards. Winning the coveted Overall Best Performing Province category for an unprecedented second time in a row was the cherry on the top.

KwaZulu-Natal beat hands down its other eight provincial counterparts including the Best Levels 1 and 2 Accredited Municipalities awards.

The first was to Hibiscus Coast Municipality which is highly regarded among its peers for the careful planning and delivery of housing projects. The second was to uMhlathuze Municipality which also received thunderous applause for its housing delivery successes.

An elated MEC Pillay said that the impressive wins is a clear demonstration of the strong partnership the department has with its strategic partners such as municipalities and implementing agents.

“The Govan Mbeki awards are a powerful vote of confidence in our ability in KZN to get the job of housing delivery done. Despite the limited financial resources we have, we are still able to deliver on our mandate. I want to congratulate our staff and all the municipalities who have worked hard to get these results.”
