White water bays best for shad – VIDEO

Using live pinky as bait is recommended.

WE are having one epic winter fishing season with huge shoals of garrick, kob as well as giant Natal snoek weighing in at over 8kgs being caught.

There’s still good action at all the popular fishing points with mainly garrick and kob making up most of the catch but still not as busy as you would think according to the shoals of big fish seen passing. Some of the local guys reckoned that it had to do with spawning and a marine biologist I spoke to believes this is the case. The good news is that once they have finished what they are doing, there will be lots of action and things are going to be fun!

It’s bad luck that so many guys seem to be having tackle failure and losing fish, but our recommendation to use live pinky as bait, still stands.

The shad have been all over. Still mixed size but if you find there’s not much happening on the points a useful tip might be to try the little nooks and crannies. Also head to those little bays with plenty of working white water as the shad are getting pushed in really close by the large number of visiting seasonal predators. I have have been doing this and it has been proved rewarding.

On the ‘artificial’ side, some nice snoek and garrick have come out on plug and small spoons. Marko ‘main man’ de Santi pulled in a nice blacktip ‘kingie’ on Tuesday off Uvongo pier.

There have been incredible amounts of bait fish around lately, with most guys thinking they were sardines. However one netting in Ramsgate proved to be mackerel.

Good luck and tight lines!
