Woman found hanged in jail cell
Her trousers, tied to bars on the window, were around her neck.
THE ‘out-of-control’, allegedly drunk daughter of a 77-year-old Port Edward man was found hanged in a jail cell with her own trousers on Monday this week.
According to reports, at about 7.20pm on Monday the man made a frantic call to police, claiming that his daughter, (43), was becoming violent.
He asked them to remove her from the house, said SAPS spokesman Captain Gerald Mfeka.
When officers arrived they found the woman in a rage. They tried to calm her down, but in vain. They were forced to take her to the police station where she would be charged with disturbance and drunkenness.
Upon arrival, she was instructed to sit near the charge office, but continued to be disruptive. She then asked to smoke a cigarette outside which the officers allowed, hoping it would calm her down.
However, a few minutes later, they found she had fled. A patrol vehicle was sent to find her and she was returned to the police station.
She was charged before being placed in the holding cells where she began banging on the door and shouting.
The noise stopped after a while and the highly frustrated policemen were relieved, assuming she had finally calmed down.
However, when they went to check on her shortly afterwards, they found her lying dead next to a window.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) was called as a matter of routine and a post mortem was conducted.
