ATM theft suspect shot in Margate

The security guard intervened and shot the suspect in the lower back.

A MAN was shot by an alert security guard after he allegedly tried to rob a 54-year-old man at an ATM in Marine Drive, Margate, last Friday.

Police spokesman Captain Gerald Mfeka said the victim, from Okhushwini location, near Margate, punched in his pin code, but the machine rejected it.

“At that point, a man approached the victim and offered his assistance. The man instructed the card holder to re-insert his card and punch in his pin code again, which he duly did. The robber then pressed various buttons and an argument started,” said Capt Mfeka.

The security guard became suspicious and shot the suspect in the lower back.

Paramedics took him to hospital for treatment and he is due to appear in the Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court soon on allegations of theft and fraud.
