Watch: ‘Africa’s most resilient lion’ and brother take on croc-filled waters

A cat with nine lives took a daunting trip in Uganda, which was filmed using heat detection cameras on drones.

Jacob – ‘Africa’s most resilient lion’ – and his brother Tibu have been filmed making a remarkable swim of between 1.5 and 2km through the crocodile-infested waters of the Kazinga Channel in Uganda.

According to The Guardian, the duo twice failed to make it across the channel, but their reluctance to give up saw them eventually succeed. Their strong will comes as no surprise, as Jacob got his nickname after surviving several harrowing ordeals.

CBS News reports he has been gored by a buffalo, his family was poisoned for the lion body part trade, he was caught in a poacher’s snare, and lost one of his rear legs in a separate poaching incident.

His amazing journey has over the years been documented by researcher Dr Alexander Braczkowski of the Griffith University in Queensland, Australia. According to the university’s website, Braczkowski is the scientific lead of the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust, an NPO that works to safeguard and promote eco-tourism in Uganda and Rwanda.

Braczkowski and his team, including South African filmmaker Luke Ochse, captured the recent ‘record-breaking’ night swim ‘using high-definition heat detection cameras on drones’, according to The Guardian.
