Freedom was not free: Tlebere

“This year's theme is particularly relevant as we commemorate 30 years of freedom in our country."

VEREENIGING. – The ANC’s Women’s League (ANCWL) in Sedibeng celebrated Heritage Day in style at the party’s offices in Vereeniging on Tuesday, September 24.

The celebration was under the national theme: “Celebrating the lives of our heroes and heroines who laid down their lives for our freedom.”

ANCWL Regional Secretary Disebo Tlebere said that the theme resonates deeply with women, as they believe it is vital to honour those whose sacrifices have enabled them to enjoy the fruits of freedom today.

“We also pay tribute to Duma Nokwe, as his remains are finally being returned home today, fulfilling a deeply held wish of our region. Heritage Month serves as a time for South Africans to reflect on our rich cultures, histories, and identities. It invites us to honour those who have played pivotal roles in shaping our society and to pay homage to their sacrifices and achievements.”

Tlebere further added that celebrating one’s heritage is crucial, not only for remembering the immense sacrifices that underpin freedom, but also for ensuring that the we do not repeat the horrific experiences of our past.

“This year’s theme is particularly relevant as we commemorate 30 years of freedom in our country. It provides an opportunity for reflection on what we, as a nation, have done to honour the heroes and heroines of our struggle and to learn from their contributions and sacrifices. ANCWL wholeheartedly support the theme’s message of remembering those who sacrificed everything for our freedom, and we hope it extends far beyond this year. We must always remember that this freedom was not free.”
