Down memory lane with four times boxing champion
"I want to be a good role model to these youngsters to guide them properly because it is not easy out there especially when you become successful."
SEBOKENG.- David “Mixo” Potsane (60) is probably the most successful former boxer to come from Vaal. Sedibeng Ster Sport visited this former four-time boxing champion at his home in Zone 12 to reflect on his boxing career.
Potsane spent sixteen years in the United States of America (USA) and he still has fond memories of the country. He was one of the generations who put Vaal on the world boxing map when this region was well known for producing household names in boxing.
Apart from being a boxer, Potsane was living a glamorous life in the USA and made headlines when he married a white American woman. As a youngster, Potsane joined the Kron Gym under the guidance of Bernard Moeketsi who was known for his hard training. This is where he started to mature as a boxer and became a household name in South African boxing.
“I must say boxing made me who I am today and I’m still involved in the development of boxing. Myself and Aaron Kabi are running a boxing club at Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complex. The aim is to share our experience with these upcoming youngsters so as not to make the same mistake some of us committed when we were young. I am still passionate about boxing because today people know about David Potsane and if it wasn’t for boxing I don’t think people would know me.”
“Look, I had money and I would travel to the USA and other parts of the world just to enjoy either with friends or my family. I enjoyed my stay in the USA and I had the best memories there but I came back home when I was no longer enjoying life there. Many things happened and I had to come back home.” said Potsane.
Not long ago Potsane was celebrating his 60 birthday.
