In pictures: Evaton residents launch ‘swimming pool’ at massive pothole in the area

Evaton West residents close the year by hosting pool party at massive pothole in the area.

EMFULENI. – The residents of Evaton West have once again demonstrated their frustrations over giant potholes in the area by launching a ‘swimming pool’ at one of them.

This is not the first time that residents demonstrated in this manner.  In October last year, pictures and videos went viral after frustrated residents were seen diving into a gigantic pothole.

This prompted a visit from former Gauteng MEC for Public Transport and Road Infrastructure Jacob Mamabolo who assured residents that local government would prioritize the fixing of that road.

Residents say that they are forced to walk long distances to the main road as taxis no longer come into the area.

“We have to walk to the main road in order to get taxis to various areas because of the state of this road.  Motorists living in the area also have to take alternative routes in order to get to their residences.”

A fed up resident, Lebohang Khambule posted multiple pictures on Facebook on new year’s eve with the caption : Official grand opening of the mother of all potholes swimming pool ceremony at Evaton West.

Khambule says, “The condition has gotten worse since the MEC was here. Taxi drivers refuse to drop us off. They drop us off on the Golden Highway because of the condition of the road. This putsus  atrisk because sometimes it is late in the evening.

“The potholes are massive. As tall as I am, the level of the water in that pothole reaches above my waist. If a five-year-old got into that water, it is very possible that they would drown.”

A crèche owner known to Sedibeng Ster said it is a struggle for parents to bring their kids every morning as they have to bear the bad road conditions.

Sedibeng Ster has inquired with  Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM).
