ELM security guards arrested for theft of copper while on duty

This guards who were working on night shift at the time, allegedly stripped off the electric cables from the transformers.

EREENIGING. – A tip off has led to the arrest of three security guards in possession of a copper cable with an estimation of R50 million on Monday.
The alleged suspects were caught red handed while on duty at theDuncanville, Vereenigigng Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) electrical depot on at around 04:30 am.
The forth suspected managed to escape before the officials arrived.
Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda confirmed that three suspects have been arrested and handed to the police.
This comes after the guards who were working on night shift at the time, allegedly stripped off the electric cables from the transformers.
Some of the transformers were to be repaired while others were ready to be distributed to the affected areas such as Sebokeng, Bedworthpark, Steel Park, Bophelong Extension and Mkhelele to name but few areas.
It alleged that the tip-off was made by one of a senior worker at the depot as he had apparently been monitoring the security guards’ modus operandi.
During that fateful morning the workers had already filled up their transport ready to drive off,  and they had already stuffed the copper in white plastic bags.
They were stopped by the ELM investigators.
