Suspect arrested in hitch-hiking incident

SASOLBURG. – Motorists are warned to stop offering lifts to strangers and hitch hikers.

The hikers are also advised to use the formal mode of transport to avoid trouble. The Sasolburg Police Spokesperson, Captain Malebo Khosana said several incidents were reported in Free St Khosana said that an incident was reported by a woman driving from Vredeford to Kroonstad recently.

This is after the victim stopped on her way to look at something in her car boot. At the time she was approached by a man asking a lift and on their way near Ruiterbos farm the male asked the driver to stop as he wanted to relieve himself.

“Instead the man pulled out a firearm pointed at the driver. The driver did not give up as she fought back and he managed to overpowered the suspect.”

Khosana further said that another passing motorist saw the incident and called the police for help.

“The man was arrested charged with attempted hijacking and a pointing of firearm.”

Police say they are aware of the economic challenges people are faced with, however, Acting District Commissioner Brigadier Mapulane Mbeloane said that it is a fact that people are desperate for transport and others hitch hikes. “Let’s adhere to roads traffic regulations at all time,” said  Mbeloane.
