Traveler or tourist – that is the question?

The Collins English dictionary defines a traveller as "somebody who often travels from place to place". Someone who wants to visit some local attractions, but insists on finding those off-the-beaten-track marvels.

Another and somewhat humorous definition of a traveller is someone who will enjoy local delicacies without reserve, and then just bear the fluidity of his/her culinary endeavours with painful delight.

A tourist, on the other hand, is defined as “someone who goes on holiday”.

Which of the two are you?

Regular travellers will tell you how travelling has enriched their lives, enhanced their knowledge and understanding of the challenges of people outside of their own culture and frame of reference. These insights often result in people choosing to do something different and more meaningful with their own lives. And well, is this not something that we all aspire to?

Valuable advice for first-time adventurers:

• Irrespective of your title – tourist or traveller – researching, planning, packing, and getting documentation and medical/travel insurance in order, are but some of the necessities that have to be attended to before you step out of your front door into your adventure.
• Important tip: Do not plan yourself to death. Leave some time for impromptu activities and delays to explore those opportunities that will present themselves unannounced.
• Store extra copies of all your travel documents in a different bag or place. Reports of tourists/travellers being robbed of all their valuables and documents are not uncommon and can be emotionally devastating.
• Although travel experiences will stay with one for many years, recording it with a still or video camera and noting down your thoughts at the end of each day is always valuable.
• Fitness – ensure that you are physically fit enough to endure the demands of your trip.
• What to pack will be dictated by the type of adventure trip you are planning. List the essentials and the items/equipment that can be rented at the location of your adventure.
• A small emergency kit and extra water to keep you hydrated is critical.
• Cash is king – so always have some on hand.
• If you use any medication, ensure that you are covered for the duration of your trip.

Adventurer or tourist, you want to arrive back home rested and rejuvenated, not exhausted. Although being exhausted but brimming with a grateful heart can be truly rewarding on so many levels.

Hasta la vista…
