Lactation cookies: Munch your way to great milk production

While there are many foods that help boost your breastmilk production, the yummiest of the lot must be this delicious cookie recipe.

Lactation cookies are a great way to combine milk-producing galactagogues into a delicious easy to eat snack you can take with you just about anywhere. Fenugreek, brewers yeast, oats, and barley feature in the old wives’ books about milk production prominently and if nothing else, a cookie break offers moms a chance to relax, recharge, and get some calories in. Our lactation cookies recipe is tried and tested, and, best of all, taste delicious! Here’s how you make them:

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 tbsp milled flaxseed
  • 3 tbsp water
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 2 tbsp brewer’s yeast
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 cups oats
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 2 tbsp whole flaxseed optional

Great tip: you can add chocolate chips, raisins, or nuts of your choice for extra flavour and variety.

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 180°C
  • In a mixing bowl, mix the coconut oil and sugar until soft. Add the egg and vanilla and mix.
  • Mix the flaxseed powder with water then add to your coconut oil mixture.
  • Add flour, brewer’s yeast, cinnamon, oats, flaxseeds, and salt to the mixing bowl and mix well.
  • Scoop out the batter onto a lined or sprayed baking tray.
  • Bake for 10-15 minutes.
