Electric Mustang prototype, no tame pony

Electric vehicles continuously demonstrate their efficiency within the different segments of the vehicle market and while some has even gained respect at the drag strips, none has recorded a low-8-second time and 275km/h on the quarter-mile until now.

The quarter-mile crushing Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 prototype developed by Ford Performance is a one-off drag racer with all-electric propulsion. Without using a single drop of petrol the battery-powered Mustang Cobra dragster is estimated to deliver 1 045 kW and 1 490 N.m of instantaneous torque. The technology used in the Cobra Jet 1400 prototype will help engineers develop new and advance powertrains resulting in high performing and efficient battery-powered Mustangs like the all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV revealed earlier this year.

“Ford has always used motorsport to demonstrate innovation and electric powertrains give us a completely new kind of performance and the all-electric Cobra Jet 1400 is one example of pushing new technology to the absolute limit. We’re excited to showcase what’s possible in an exciting year when we also have the all-electric Mustang Mach-E joining the Mustang family,” Dave Pericak, Global Director, Ford Icons.

“This project was a challenge for all of us at Ford Performance, but a challenge we loved jumping into. We saw the Cobra Jet 1400 project as an opportunity to start developing electric powertrains in a race car package that we already had a lot of experience with, so we had performance benchmarks we wanted to match and beat right now. This has been a fantastic project to work on, and we hope the first of many coming from our team at Ford Performance Motorsports,” Mark Rushbrook, Global Director, Ford Performance Motorsports.

Although the Cobra Jet 1400, built with the assistance of MLe Racecars, Watson Engineering, AEM EV, Cascadia will be demonstrating its capabilities to drag racing fans and motoring enthusiast, media members and competitors at a drag racing event later this year. However, to get a sneak peek prior to this event, MotorTrend On Demand’s “Hard Cell” series will be showcasing electric vehicles pushing innovation boundaries and the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 prototype is certainly one of those.
