VANDERBIJLPARK. – On Saturday, September 17, WSKF South Africa once again hosted a very successful development tournament in Vanderbijlpark.
More than 240 karateka between the ages of 5 and 21 took part in this event and presented a high level of competition in front of a full stadium of spectators.
Local teams competed against other WSKF South Africa teams from Potchefstroom, Alberton and Pretoria. The tournament included kata, kumite and team kata divisions as well as an excellent nunchaku demonstration by some of the very talented black belt members.
WSKF South Africa Chief Instructor and Vice President for WSKF in Africa, Sensei Michael Dukas says: “I am happy to say that this has once again been a very successful event and would like to thank our guests, sponsors, spectators and members, and especially the parents, for their participation and support. In addition, a big thank you to the various instructors for the many hours they put in to train the karateka for this event. Well done to every member who participated. I am incredibly proud of the good manners, discipline and great spirit displayed by competitors and officials alike. This is what karate is about!”
This tournament is held every two years to encourage young karateka to enter their first tournament but also to give referees and judges an opportunity to test and improve their skills. It is also the start of the preparations for the more experienced WSKF members who will be representing South Africa at the 13th WSKF World Karate Championships in Tokyo, Japan in August next year.
WSKF South Africa practices traditional Shotokan Karate.
“We endeavour to ensure that all students receive karate tuition of the highest quality so they may benefit by understanding the values and the deeper aspects of karate. Karate training has many benefits – especially for children ¬– which include the development of three important areas of their personality, namely self-confidence, etiquette and discipline. Karate can be practised by everyone – men, women and children; fit or not, young and old,” says Sensei Michael.
Membership is open to the young (from 5 years old) and not so young. Anyone interested in starting karate training can contact WSKF South Africa regarding the location of its dojos and the dates for the next beginners’ classes.
