Celebrating the young

As you might all be aware, June marks an important period of our democracy as this is the month we are reminded of the immense contribution made by the country’s young people in the struggle for freedom, justice and equality.

As you might all be aware, June marks an important period of our democracy as this is the month we are reminded of the immense contribution made by the country’s young people in the struggle for freedom, justice and equality. The images of 16 June 1976 were horrible. The events of 16th June are but a representation of what other young people across South Africa were at the time faced with.

It has been more than three decades on, therefore, we cannot forget the contribution of these young people who at a very difficult period in South Africa’s history, identified a course for themselves within the broader struggle for freedom and directed all their energies and courage towards (and indeed at times sacrificed their lives for) liberating South Africa. It is in that spirit that we should recommit ourselves to invest in the cause for young people.

Let us use this month to actively encourage greater social cohesion and nation building, while also fostering African unity. South Africa is an integral part of the African Continent. Together we can build a better South Africa and better Africa.

This National Youth Month, is a moment of thanksgiving dedicated to the young people of our country for the contribution they made to free South Africa. Lest we forget.
