Take DDC games to community – Finish and klaar!

"It doesn’t make sense for PSL to take these DDC games to the so-called suburbs which are far away from the community."

SEDIBENG.- Zakes’s Sports Corner is under the impression that the DSTV Diski Challenge is treated like the stepchildren of PSL.

Yes, I just said it.

For example, the DTSV Diski Challenge games at the Isak Steyl Stadium in Vanderbijlpark are played in front of empty seats. We all know why. Zakes’ Sports Corner is under the impression that PSL doesn’t care about the DDC games anymore. It seems there is no more effort to market and promote this PSL Reserve League.

Zakes’ Sports Corner was under the impression that the local soccer fans would come in their numbers when Orlando Pirates hosted Magesi at the Isak Steyl Stadium on Saturday. I was wrong to think so, to say the least! Zakes’ Sports Corner asked one of the local coaches the reason why people don’t come in numbers to watch these DDC teams. His immediate response was that the games should be brought closer to the community. He is right, Zakes Sports Corner thought as much.

There is the George Thabe Stadium or the Boipatong Stadium that PSL can consider to take the games closer to the community. It is not as if those venues are not in a good condition to host games of such a high standard. In the past, these same venues hosted high-profile events such as the Four Nations Tournaments.

Those venues are much better compared to some of the venues where DDC games are played in Gauteng. The Boipatong soccer fans always pack Boipatong Stadium to capacity even when it is low-profile games. They are passionate about football, to say the least. Zakes’ Sports Corner’s plea to PSL is to take the DDC games to either of the two venues. It doesn’t make sense for PSL to take these DDC games to the so-called suburbs which are far away from the community. Those players want to play in front of a crowd just like their elderly brothers in PSL.

They must get used to playing in front of a big crowd!

Vaal is a home for football but by taking the games away from the community you starve the soccer fans. This is the reason why they choose to go to the dusty soccer grounds to watch kasi football. Zakes’ Sport Corner doesn’t blame them; football has been taken away from them. Football belongs to the community!
