‘Vaal’s Monster’ shines in the MTN8 final

After the game, the community took to the streets in Sharpeville chanting Mofokeng’s name.

SHARPVILLE.- The Vaal sensation Relebohile ‘Vaal Monster’ Mofokeng was the talk of the town after he came in as a substitution to help Orlando Pirates make history when they lifted the MTN8 trophy for the third time in a row.

Pirates achieved this feat at the expense of Stellenbosch at the sold-out Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday evening. This Sharpeville-born star came in as a sub and immediately made an impact when he created a goal for the Pirates. As if this was not enough, he turned Stellenbosch’s goalkeeper and defender into robots before he scored a third goal for Orlando Pirates.

After the game, the community took to the streets in Sharpeville chanting Mofokeng’s name and in some taverns and clubs the beers were served for free to celebrate this young star. Mofokeng is currently a household name in South African football. He is part of Bafana Bafana’s 23-man squad for the upcoming 2025 Afcon Qualifier double-header against Congo Brazzaville. The first leg will be played at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday.

Speaking to journalists after the final, Mofokeng said it was an incredible feeling to be part of the team that made history.

“I can’t believe I’m sitting here with the MTN8 medal. I want to thank the technical staff and my teammates for pushing me to work hard. What we achieved was a team effort.”
