A commitment to serve with a smile

MEYERTON – Scores of health workers from the Sedibeng District recently committed to serve patients with a smile. The commitment was carried out recently, as the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) launched the ‘I Serve with a Smile’ campaign. The event took place at the Meyerton Sports Club on September 27.

The campaign which was provincially launched in November 2023 is part of the GDoH’s ongoing efforts to improve patient experience of care and create a culture of empathy and compassion that permeates every aspect of the Gauteng healthcare delivery.

The Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, said the healthcare system faced challenges that seemed impossible to overcome.

“We know that patient complaints, service delivery challenges, and staff morale issues have been at the forefront of our public health discourse. But today, we turn the page. Today, we usher in a new era of hope and dedication, where compassion and professionalism will guide our actions.”

Nkomo-Ralehoko said the campaign promises the people of Sedibeng that health workers will serve with warmth, empathy, and respect.

“This is not just to launch another initiative, but to take a significant step in transforming the way healthcare services are delivered in the Sedibeng District and throughout Gauteng. This campaign is more than a slogan, it is a commitment to improve the patient experience of care and foster a positive, supportive environment for our healthcare workers and the people they serve.”

The campaign is anchored on the principles of Batho Pele. Ralehoko said she is pleased that many of the workers have already taken pledges to support the movement.

The MEC says it is important to bring dignity and care to every patient who walks through their doors.
