Drama and trauma in equal measure!

There is so much that has changed in our football after Vaal Professional was relegated from topflight football.

The legendary English football commentor, Peter Drury, said:

“Football take human beings to places they haven’t imagined. This game tears you up. When you think you’ve seen it all, it delivers again. Drama and trauma in equal measure”.

The George Thabe Stadium, Kwa-Masiza Stadium and Zamdela Stadium holds great memories for Zakes’ Sports Corner. This was during the days when Vaal Professional was still part of topflight football. Gone are the days when local soccer fans used to pack those above-mentioned venues to capacity to watch Vaal Monsters, as it was affectionately known, in South African football. Teams like Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns know what it was like to take a short trip to come play in the Vaal against Vaal Pros.

It was not only about football, but the community would come to sell food and refreshments among others on the match day to feed their families. Can somebody bring back those good old memories in our local football. Kwa-Masiza Stadium was the best venue we ever had in this region, but today the same venue that was known as the slaughter houses for Vaal Pros has become a “spinning heaven for cars”.

The venue was neglected and later became a white elephant.

There is so much that has changed in our football after Vaal Professional was relegated from topflight football. For example, when Vaal Pros hosted Chiefs or Pirates, the whole Vaal Triangle would come to a standstill. All the roads would lead either to Kwa-Masiza or the Zamdela Stadium. Zakes’ Sports Corner pleads with local companies and businesses to buy the PSL status to have a professional soccer club in this region. This will help in terms of job creation, because in the past the community used to benefit from football.

Zakes’ Sports Corner challenges big cooperates in this region to join hands to bring back the glory days in the Vaal Triangle. Football used to take human beings to places they couldn’t imagine – vuvuzelas used to be the order of the day on match day.

“It was drama and trauma in equal measure.”

Those with long memories will attest to this, the Vaal Triangle is no longer the same without a professional football team.
