Auditor General hails Midvaal for 10 consecutive clean audits

DA Gauteng leader Solly Msimanga congratulated the municipality for its performance in the Auditor General of South Africa, Tsakane Maluleke’s, Consolidated General Report on Local Government Audit Outcomes.

MIDVAAL – The Midvaal Local Municipality (MLM) is once again in the spotlight after being named the only municipality in Gauteng with a clean audit status for the 2022/23 financial year.

For the past 10 consecutive years, MLM has maintained a clean audit status, making it the most financially sustainable municipality in the province.

DA Gauteng leader Solly Msimanga congratulated the municipality for its performance in the Auditor General of South Africa, Tsakane Maluleke’s, Consolidated General Report on Local Government Audit Outcomes.

“Midvaal has achieved a remarkable milestone by maintaining a clean audit record for an impressive 10 years, showcasing an exemplary commitment to financial integrity and accountability.”

Msimanga said this achievement indicates that local governments can operate effectively and provide excellent service to their residents when proper financial controls are in place and dedicated leaders are appointed.

In a detailed report, Maluleke explained why it is important for municipalities to maintain a clean audit status.

“When a municipality receives a clean audit, this means it has accurate records that allow it to communicate transparently to communities about whether and when their needs will be met. This enables the council and everyone with an interest in the municipality – particularly communities, community organisations, and those in national and provincial government who need to oversee the municipality’s performance and provide the support it needs to succeed – to judge how the municipality is doing and to take action where necessary.”

Maluleke said municipalities that have institutionalised controls and systems in place to plan, measure, monitor, and account for their finances and performance, are more likely to have a solid foundation on which councils can build to improve their performance and deliver most of the promised services.

“Sustained, consistent and meaningful clean audits translate into improvements in the lived realities of ordinary South Africans,” she said.
