ELM mayor doesn’t look like his problems

“Many people were not aware that he was a mayor because he was wearing shorts like everyone else."

VANDERBIJLPARK.- They say “don’t look like your problems.”

The same can be said about the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Mayor Sipho Radebe.

Despite all the challenges that ELM faces, especially the recent attachment of their bank accounts, the mayor didn’t look like “his problems” as he had fun participating in the aerobics at Isak Steyl Stadium in Vanderbijlpark. The aerobics were part of Vaal River City Marathon’s programme. Radebe showcased his moves as if he wanted to forget about his challenges as the mayor of the trouble-torn ELM.

To date, the power utility Eskom has attached ELM assets over R8b debt after the municipality failed to keep their promises. Sedibeng Ster Sport captured the moment with young and old having fun on the day. Not many recognised the mayor as he was not dressed in his usual attire. He was wearing a blue short and a white Vaal River City Marathon T-shirt.

Zacharia Twala, who was the aerobics instructor on the day, said he felt honoured to see the mayor joining them. He told Sedibeng Ster Sport this was good motivation to see an important person like the mayor also participating in his aerobics class.

“Many people were not aware that he was a mayor because he was wearing shorts like everyone else. This is a challenge to many people out there, especially men, to put their busy schedules aside to participate in activities like aerobics. I was inspired by the mayor and I now realise how important aerobics is in the community,” said Twala.
