Community patroller shot dead

Four of the community patrollers got shot, and one was declared dead at the scene.

EVATON.- A case of murder and three of attempted murder is being investigated after a patroller was shot and killed and three others injured in Eatonside, Evaton last Friday.

According to police a group of about nine volunteer community patrollers were patrolling around Area 1 Eatonside at 22:50, when they spotted a white Opel Corsa bakkie that one of the community members had complained about, stating that the vehicle was suspicious. The community patrollers then approached that vehicle and found one occupant inside. They requested to search the vehicle. Upon searching the vehicle, they saw two airguns at the back of the bakkie.

“The occupant of that vehicle then started to speak to someone on his cellphone, saying that he has been caught. Suddenly, there were sounds of gunshots coming from the dark, shooting at the patrollers,” Constable Thulisile Msibi said.

Four of the community patrollers got shot, and one was declared dead at the scene. Three others were rushed to Levai Mbatha Clinic for medical attention.
