‘For me jazz is a way of life’: Mofokeng

“Jazz is not just music for me."

SHARPEVILLE.– For 56-year-old Sellwane Mofokeng, the secretary of the Sharpeville Ladies Jazz Club, jazz is not just music but a way of life.

Mofokeng has been part of the club that was formed by her sibling, Malekgotla Mofokeng, since 2022. She has been to a number of jazz functions at places such as Mokwallo in Vredefort, Ubuntu Kraal in Mohlakeng, Merafong in Carletonville and Bapedi Hall in Zone 3 Meadowlands in Soweto, where she has played her favourite jazz music for the crowds, much to their excitement.

Mofokeng said that she was inspired by male jazz fanatics such as Bona Sera of Lekoa FM, Aubrey ‘De Great’ Moopeloa, Steve Mokgomo Potsane of Sharpeville Jazz Giants, Malefe Phakoa from Steelpark in Vereeniging and Bro Thekiso from Phelandaba in Sharpeville.

During this past Women’s Month, she was perfecting her spinning in various club sessions and functions that were held throughout Sedibeng, with her favourite jazz artists being Nina Simone and Letta Mbuli. Her wish is to motivate young girls to join the jazz society.

“Jazz is not just music for me, it’s a way of life,” she told Sedibeng Ster.
