Gold and silver for young scientists

The duo investigated the effectiveness of hairspray as an alternative to fixing spray on charcoal drawings, and discovered that hairspray not only seals the drawings better, but is also more cost-effective.

SASOLBURG – Four Grade Seven learners from North Primary School participated in the Eskom Expo’s regional finals for grade 4 – 12 learners at the University of the Free State’s Qwaqwa campus on July 26 and 27.

Ntokozo Mbatha and Ofentse Matras’ group project secured gold medals and the trophy for overall category winners in chemistry for grades 4 – 12.

The duo investigated the effectiveness of hairspray as an alternative to fixing spray on charcoal drawings, and discovered that hairspray not only seals the drawings better, but is also more cost-effective.

Trey Schalkwyk and Keanu Pillay’s science projects won silver.

“The expo provided a platform for learners of different ages to tackle various scientific questions, chat with experts and receive valuable feedback. The expo emphasised once again how important it is to promote thinking in the field of science,” said teacher Suné Blignaut from North Primary School.
