Residents march against initiation schools’ crime

The demonstration was meant to voice their concerns and to meet with the Station Commander following a group of young people who had allegedly been terrorising the community.

SHARPEVILLE. – Members of the Sharpeville community recently marched to the local police station.

The demonstration was meant to voice their concerns and to meet with the Station Commander following a group of young people who had allegedly been terrorising the community, in particular youth that were coming from the high schools near the Sharpeville Hall and the George Thabe Stadium.

It is alleged that the youngsters confronted others in connection with initiation schools in the area. The community and its leaders met with the Station Commander to demand action.

“We are happy with the outcome of the meeting and hope that going forward, we will work closely with the police in solving the rising crime in our township,” the community leaders, who included leaders from the Initiation Schools Forum (ISF), said.

Sharpeville Police spokesperson Constable Busisiwe Sango said that the ISF was engaged in awareness campaigns at the schools.

“The community was encouraged to report any form of crime and to give police tip-offs regarding organised crimes that are being committed in the community. The station commander further encouraged the community to report poor service delivery directly to him, as his door is always open to the community.”
