S’kuluma no Karabo Teatea

SHARPEVILLE - Karabo Teatea (14) is another promising referee to have come from Vaal.

This grade eight Hoërskool Overaal learner, from Tshepiso Phase 5, was part of the officials who were tasked to officiate the Gauteng Development U17 Festival Games at George Thabe Stadium on Sunday.
Teatea was outstanding and never intimidated by the big occasion especially when he was the “middleman” when Kaizer Chiefs played against Highlands Park in the last game of the day.
He handled the game like a seasoned match official. This was much-appreciated from both teams after the game. Both teams’ benches were full of compliments for this young referee.
As if this was not enough, after the game between Tuks and Mamelodi Sundowns earlier on the day, the Tuks coach walked over to him and shook his hand.

“You have a great future and you’re inspirational to other youngsters out there in your community. You’re such a brave young referee – keep it up,” she said.

Teatea was the main topic of the day since he was the youngest referee on the day. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, after the Sundowns and Tuks game, the multitalented Teatea said even though he played soccer and rugby, refereeing will remain his top priority.
This is what he had to say in an exclusive interview with Sedibeng Ster Sport’s S’kuluma no.

Q: How do you feel after officiating a ‘high profile’ game between Kaizer Chiefs and Highlands Park?
A: I was very nervous not to make mistakes, because the game was live on television, but my colleague helped me to calm down.

Q: What was your reaction when you were told you’re going to be the middleman in this game?
A: Like I said, I was very nervous, but I think I did very well.

Q: Where do you want to see yourself in refereeing?
A: I want to become a professional referee and also be on the FIFA refereeing panel.

Q: How did you become a referee?
A: I was identified by schools as I would sometimes be the referee in some of the schools’ games. This is how I ended up here.

Q: I’ve been told that you play soccer and rugby.
A: Yes, but I think refereeing is my first priority now, seeing that it could actually take me somewhere.
