The drama unfolded in the early hours of August 2 when 12 Meatmaster sheep worth R48 000 were stolen from the Zoekfontein/VaalBank smallholdings around 01:00.

Members of the Sedibeng Mounted Unit were engaged in a joint rural crime prevention operation later that same morning when, with the assistance of a farm worker, they came across eight adult sheep and two very young lambs. The sheep’s legs were tied and they could only lie on the ground. Except for one newborn lamb that died, the rest of the animals were unharmed.

After the rightful owner had identified his animals and a stock theft case was registered, the sheep were returned to the owner. Four of the 12 stolen sheep have not yet been recovered.

Farmers from the area thanked the police members involved for their prompt service. They were Captain Arthur Sono, Captain Morné Brown, Warrant Officer Johan Helm, Warrant Officer Jacob Mqumbisa, Sergeant Thabo Machobane and Sergeant Bongani Morris.
