Mother shattered as two kids die in shack fire

24-year-old Lerato Adams says she is left with nothing after her two kids were killed in a shack fire.

SHARPEVILLE – A mother’s world came crashing down after her kids, Bophelo Adams (21-months) and Hlonolofatso Adams (5) were tragically killed in a shack fire over the weekend. The incident happened in Phelindaba, Sharpeville on August 17.

The 24- year-old mother, Lerato Adams, says she left her shack after an argument with the father of her toddler who threatened her life.

“I left him with the kids and went to my friend’s house hoping that he would calm down. I thought I was protecting my kids not to see us fighting, but little did I know that I will never see them again.”

Adams said while she was at her friend’s house, the friend went to buy drinks but came back in a rush to inform her that her shack is on fire.

“We ran to my home and upon arrival, my shack was on fire. My boyfriend was nowhere to be seen. I was told that both my kids were inside. I was too afraid to go near the shack because I feared seeing my kids like that.”
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Adams divulged that she suspects her boyfriend is responsible for the fire.

“He was nowhere to be seen following the incident. He called me on Sunday and said that he is sorry for what he did and that he made a mistake.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do without my kids. They gave my life meaning and purpose. I am left with nothing, I am nothing,” the weeping mother said.

Sharpeville police spokesperson Constable Busisiwe Sango confirms the incident, adding that an inquest case docket is being investigated.
