Son of former top cop in court for alleged kidnapping, extortion

The two policemen are alleged to have been involved in the kidnapping and extortion of a man.

The son of retired Sedibeng District Commisioner, Major General Zodwa Molefe, and another policeman have appeared in the Springs Magistrates Court, on Monday, August 12, on charges of kidnapping and extortion.

Constable Thabiso Pule Molefe and Constable Paseka Matena made a brief appearance earlier this week, but are set to return to court on Wednesday, 14 August for a formal bail application.

According to a statement issued by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), the two police officers, aged 31 and 33 years, allegedly approached a man called Pita Muthisse, in Springs and instructed him to get into their vehicle, and they drove off with him.

The men allegedly accused Muthisse of being involved in illegal mining.

“Mr Ntshangane called Muthisse and he told him that the police officers who allegedly abducted him, have handed him to Basotho nationals, who are demanding R2 million for his safe return. The ransom was lowered to R150 000 and later to R20 000,” explains Pheladi Shuping, a spokesperson for IPID.

The incident was reported to IPID and the two police officers, both stationed at Midrand Highway Patrol, were arrested. Muthisse was released after the arrest of of the police officers.
