In the spirit of Mandela Day

“It was 67 minutes well spent with community, young and old together to promote the spirit of Mandela Day.”

SEBOKENG – Serapeng Sa Dithlare and Environment joined hands with local women who dedicated their skills and effort in the name of Mandela Day.

Together, they joined hands when they collected polystyrene from local landfills to shred it and create ‘mosikare’ cooking bags. The group also collected old curtains using them as fabric cloth to make cooking bags. Mosikare cooking bags are famously used by people who prefer to use energy efficiently, people excluded from grid electricity, rural and informal settlement communities.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Mamosweu Tsoabi who is the founding member of Serapeng Sa Dithlereng said the theme of the day was, “Long Walk to a Just Energy Transition”, with women who walked from Waterdal to Tshepong for 67 minutes and hand over 28 mosikare cooking bags to gogos (grannies) who needed it most.She said this initiative was part of celebrating Mandela Day with South Africans, as millions embarked on various community activities in the name of the iconic Nelson Mandela.

This occasion was blessed by the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Mayor Ntate Sipho Radebe and 02 Holdings also doing some good deeds handing over blankets to the elderly from Success Mpumelelo Katleho in Tshepong, Sebokeng.

“The day was filled with joy and happiness for everyone who came through to celebrate this special day with us,” said Tsoabi in conclusion.
