VEREENIGING – A former security guard who killed a man in October 2023 has been sentenced to eight years behind bars.

The Regional Court in Vereeniging sentenced Roger Dingle to eight years imprisonment for stabbing Jan Adriaan ‘Attie’ Venter (50) repeatedly amidst an argument that occurred in Vereeniging’s City Centre.

Venter’s partner, Elsie Katarina Taylor (53), says Venter was on his way home with his bicycle, when he and Dingle got into an argument.

The incident happened on Tuesday evening, October 3 at around 17:45 near the corner of Edward Street and Stanley Avenue. Venter was stabbed several times in the neck, head, face and back with a knife.

Dingle and Venter apparently knew each other from the time when they stayed together in a hostel on Senator Marks Ave. They have allegedly argued with each other before.

Venter was taken to Sebokeng Hospital for treatment after the incident, but later succumbed to his injuries.

A murder case was then opened.

Taylor told Vaalweekblad after Dingle’s sentence: “I don’t think it (the sentence) was enough for what he did to Attie…for how it was done to him, I don’t think it was enough.”

She added: “Just remember, one gets punished on earth by people, but the day you close your eyes forever, you get eternal punishment. I have peace in my heart, because at least he (Dingle) is behind bars, but at the same time I am still unhappy and I feel quite hurt.”

“It was a hell of a hard time for me,” said Taylor.
