Skills Development Centre nourishes community

"In the near future, we will also be opening a school of linguistics where we aim to revive, promote and preserve our own African customs."

EVATON. –  The Royal Kekana Traditional Authority, under Dr Chief Leane Kekana, is making sure that impoverished local community members do not sleep on empty stomachs.

Based in Evaton, the traditional authorities are developing the community with different skills. Kenneth Zakathi, from Royal Kekana Traditional Authority, said that the authority is an urban chieftaincy that upholds affinity and ‘Ubuntu’ as its core principles.

“Kxosi (Chief) Kekana is a loving father, husband, teacher, mentor and a strong believer in God.  He always takes the opportunity to remind members of the Royal House about the value of the African Proverb that says, “Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu”, emphasising unity and love for each other. He believes as a Royal Head, he is but a servant of the people. It is for this reason that he founded the Royal Kekana Skills Development Centre,” Zakathi said.

Zakathi further said that the love for people and desire to see Evaton transform led Chief Kekana to pioneering and championing skills development, such as agriculture in Evaton, where young people are taught how to do farming, not only as a skill but also a way to create employment for themselves.

“There’s also sewing where creatives can be developed and set on their way to success, they too can use the skill to afford themselves a better life. There are also other skills such as financial literacy, work readiness programs, life skills, and arts and culture.

“In the near future, we will also be opening a school of linguistics where we aim to revive, promote and preserve our own African customs. Tradition is a huge part of what we do as it shapes and instils key principles for life in our people. We may be living in the 4IR age but that doesn’t mean we have to forget who we are, and where we come from,” said Chief Kekana.

Zakithi urged community members to come and register with them, free of charge at 413 Ward Road, Evaton.

“We are always ready and willing to make a change even if it is one life at a time.”
