Midvaal to position itself as ‘investment destination’

The goal is to establish Midvaal as a 'investment destination'.

DE DEUR. – During his State of the Municipality Address, the Executive Mayor of the Midvaal Local Municipality, Alderman Peter Teixeira, emphasised that the municipality remains committed to positioning Midvaal as an investment destination within Gauteng province.

Teixeira said that the municipality has a master plan to achieve this.

This plan includes collaborating with the private sector, increasing support and development for municipally funded and jointly funded commercial projects, investment in smart technology, fleet management, ICT, and supply chain management to expedite processes and reduce delays in procurement. Additionally, there will be an investment in informal trading stalls to dignify and formalise street trading.

This strategy to attract investment has been bearing fruit with the following businesses setting up shop in Midvaal:

• Sasol constructed a multi-million petrol station in Janteen, Meyerton, with plans to expand by building more stations.

• Construction of a R370 million mall, creating 1,200 jobs in its construction phase and promising 250 permanent jobs upon completion.

• R749 million worth of building plan applications approved in the 2023/2024 financial year.

• A total of 1,884 plans totalling an investment of R1.8 billion in construction and property fees.

• SA Taxi, one of South Africa’s largest minibus taxi providers with a network of over a billion rands, intends to move its operations from Midrand to Midvaal within the next financial year.

• Heineken is expanding its operations by building a malting plant.

Midvaal added that it is increasing support to the tourism sector and SMMEs in the area through training, linkages to opportunities, and engaging big industries to empower the local value chain.

The municipality is investing R3.2 million in the current financial year towards building the Skills Development Centre.

Heineken is anticipated to spend more than R2.5 million towards this endeavour as well.
