Association set to launch clubs at Emfuleni libraries

Anyone interested in playing the game is urged to visit their nearest library and submit their contact details.

SEDIBENG.- The Emfuleni Vaal Chess Association (EVCA) along with the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Libraries Management is set to launch chess clubs at all Emfuleni libraries.

This was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport by Johannes Lepota, who is the chairman of Emfuleni Vaal Chess Association. Lepota said this pilot project forms part of community development to foster mass participation in sport, social cohesion, as well as enhancing social and educational development.

According to Lepota this project is known as the Emfuleni Vaal Libraries Indefinite Chess Program. Lepota is urging anyone interested in playing the game to visit their nearest library and submit their contact details.

“There will be teaching, training and coaching sessions for the novices. We will be rewarding those with good performance. We have chosen to use the intellectual mind game, chess, as a unique tool to fast track all areas of development and revive the use of libraries again by the community,” said Lepota.

Lepota further explained that the EVCA is looking forward to ensuring that local libraries return to their previous functionality of opening over the weekends to give access to all people, as well as students who want to complete their researches or study further.
