Elderly woman (80) dies after robbery at home

The neighbours found her body in the bathtub, with her hands tied.

DE DEUR. – An elderly woman from De Deur Estates died on Tuesday, May 28 after she was allegedly tied up and left in her bathtub by armed robbers during a house robbery.

According to Gresham Mandy of the Walkerville Community Police Forum (CPF), it appears that the robbers tied up Helen Bruwer (80), a resident of Thornton Road, and left her in her bathtub.

They then fled in her green BMW 5 Series.

The neighbours found her body in the bathtub, with her hands tied.

The traumatic nature of the incident and shock could possibly have led to Bruwer’s death.

According to Capt. Fikile Funda, a spokesperson for the police, Bruwer’s neighbours discovered her body in the bath.

“They suspected trouble and went looking for her after she didn’t respond to messages. Upon arrival, they found the deceased in the bath, with her hands tied,” says Funda.

The neighbours took her to a hospital, where she later died.

Funda says a case of murder and robbery is being investigated.
