Bishop Jones appointed SDM Mayor temporarily

“There is currently no formal coalition agreement in place, both parties are committed to working together to reach an agreement that prioritises good governance."

VEREENIGING. – While the whole of South Africa is waiting with bated breath to see the new direction that the country will take with regards to coalitions following last week’s national elections where the ANC did not get the outright majority, the ‘coalition’ in the Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) seems to be run like a well-oiled machine.

SDM Executive Mayor Lerato Maloka, who is said to be on ‘Council businesses’ has appointed New Horizon Movement (NHM) leader, Bishop Vincent Jones, who is the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) of Finance in the SDM as the Executive Mayor of the SDM in her absence.

Upon enquiry about Jones’ appointment, albeit temporarily, the SDM said, “The Executive Mayor, Cllr Lerato Maloka is engaged with Council business outside the region since the 03rd – 08th. Cllr Vincent Jones, MMC: Finance has been appointed Acting Executive Mayor in line with all applicable regulations for the duration of Cllr Lerato Maloka’s absence in the region.”

When Jones was appointed to the Sedibeng MMC’s position last year, NHM spokesperson, Mpho Khang had said, “There is currently no formal coalition agreement in place, both parties are committed to working together to reach an agreement that prioritises good governance, service delivery, and proper financial management,” referring to the apparent ‘good’ working relations with the ruling African National Congress (ANC).

Bishop Jones is also a former MMC for Public Works in the Emfuleni Local Municipality.
