Beware of fake police

Kidnapping emerged as the dominant crime in the past week, largely attributed to cash payouts from the Road Accident Fund (RAF) and pensions.

SEBOKENG. – Sebokeng Police Station Commander, Brigadier Thembekile Kubone, recently briefed the MEC of Community Safety, Faith Mazibuko, on the challenges facing the Sebokeng precinct during a debriefing session held at an Imbizo in Boitumelo Secondary School last week.

During the session, Kubone highlighted the prevalent crimes and hotspots within the area. Kubone also outlined the proactive measures being undertaken by the station to address these issues, including weekly operations such as “Shanela” across various stations in the Sedibeng District, crime reduction initiatives, stop-and-search efforts, patrols, and community awareness campaigns led by Social Crime Prevention.

According to police spokesperson, Nthabiseng Mokhachane, kidnapping emerged as the dominant crime in the past week, largely attributed to cash payouts from the Road Accident Fund (RAF) and pensions. In response, the community was urged through media channels to exercise discretion regarding their financial status to mitigate risks.

Brigadier Thembekile Kubone emphasised the importance of community vigilance, urging residents to utilise whistles for assistance and to verify the identity of individuals claiming to be police officers, as criminals have been known to impersonate law enforcement personnel by cloning SAPS vehicles and wearing police uniforms.

Mokhachane further encouraged community engagement through participation in Community Policing Forums and emphasised the importance of promptly reporting any suspicious activity to the police via the provided hotline numbers: 0824989563, 08600 10111, or simply 10111.
