South Africans hit with fuel and electricity hikes amongst others
As the prices of electricity and petrol prices increase, motorists, households and businesses will have to dig deeper in their pockets!
This after the national power utility implemented the NERSA-approved electricity price increase on Monday, April 1.
In a statement the power utility said in October last year it applied to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) for the approval of its Retail Tariff and Structural Adjustment Application (ERTSA) and the Schedule of Tariffs for the period from April 01, 2024 to March 31, 2025.
On December 14, 2023, NERSA determined the tariff increase for 2024/25, applicable to Eskom’s direct customer tariffs from April 01, 2024, and to Eskom’s tariffs for local authorities (municipalities) from 01 July 2024 as follows:
The average increase applied to the key industrial and urban tariffs will be 13.29% due to the increase in the affordability subsidy charge. “The affordability subsidy charge is raised as a subsidy to the Homelight 20A tariff and is determined by NERSA. This charge exists due to historically lower Homelight 20A tariff increases and is paid by the non-municipal large industrial and urban tariffs,” Eskom said in a statement.
There are no tariff structural changes for 2024/25, however, Eskom is considering a tariff restructuring submission to NERSA for implementation in 2025/26.”
As of Wednesday, April 3, South African consumers will be provided with some relief in the prices of diesel, illuminating paraffin and LP Gas, but unfortunately are set to face another increase in fuel prices.
Here’s what motorists need to know:
- Petrol 93: Inland Increase of 65 cents per litre and Costal Increase of 58 cents per litre in the retail price.
- Petrol 95: Inland Increase of 67 cents per litre and Costal Increase of 60 cents per litre in the retail price.
- Diesel 500ppm: Inland Increase of 3.22 cents per litre and Costal Decrease of 3.78 cents per litre in the wholesale price.
- Diesel 50ppm: Inland Decrease of 1.78 cents per litre and Coastal Decrease of 8.78 cents per litre in the wholesale price.
- Illuminating Paraffin: Inland Decrease of 29 cents per litre and Coastal decrease of 35.7 cents per litre in the wholesale price.
- LP Gas: Decrease of 19 cents per kilogram
Other major price increases coming this week are DStv, Vodacom and Telkom.
