Nono is female football coach with “balls”

" An opportunity made me fall in love with coaching and I told myself I wanted to improve my coaching knowledge."

EVATON.- Nono Moalosi (32) is a female coach with “balls” coaching a male soccer team known as United Kingdom Academy campaigning in the Emfuleni Local Football Association’s (ELFA) Super League in the Evaton Stream.

To make it interesting the club is one of the clubs that are challenging the league title in Evaton Stream thanks to this “iron lady” who is driven by passion. It is important to note that, Moalosi, is the only female coach who coaches a male soccer team in Sedibeng. She is one of the few female coaches who coaches a male soccer team in South Africa.

It is unusual for a female coach to coach a men’s team, unlike male coaches who coach women’s soccer teams. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, after her team played a 1-1 against Tokyo Sports Development Academy, at Qedilizwe ground, Moalosi said that gone are the days when females would only coach women’s soccer teams.

She told Sedibeng Ster Sport that things have changed and women coach men’s soccer teams. She said the respect she receives from her male counterparts (coaches) is humbling, to say the least.

“I started this coaching journey as an assistant coach at VUT Ladies but by then I was without any qualifications. However, such an opportunity made me fall in love with coaching and I told myself I wanted to improve my coaching knowledge and I attended coaching courses.

“Last season I was working with Vaal Legend FC as a team Performance Analyst because I could also analyze and assist in coaching. My vision in all this saw a gap open and I took it. My wish is for Vaal football to grow with more female coaches doing what male coaches do. I challenge them not to doubt their potential and they must start at the lower leagues to gain experience,” said Moalosi.

Moalosi is not just a coach, but she is armed with a D License and recently she completed a CAF C License which was held in Ekurhuleni for female coaches only.
