Seboko scores 6 distinctions

”I want to thank my mother because if it wasn’t for her I don’t think I could have been where I’m today."

REFENGKGOTSO.- Despite being raised by a single parent, Oamohetswe (18) defied the odds when he became one of the top 100 Achiever students in Free State.

This Pele-Ya-Pele Secondary School learner was raised by his mother, Ntshiuwa Seboko since he was 9 months old. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Seboko said that he was told that his father passed on when he was 9 months old. He told Sedibeng Ster that he dedicates this achievement to his mother who has been there for him throughout.

He was part of the top achievers who were invited by the Department of Education in Bloemfontein to be honoured for their remarkable achievements. He was awarded a Well Done Certificate, laptop and smartphone, and a cheque for an undisclosed amount from Old Mutual. When asked what he is going to study, Seboko said he intends to study medicine at the University of Cape Town.

”I want to thank my mother because if it wasn’t for her I don’t think I could have been where I’m today. I owe this to her and my two siblings because I’m the first in the family to achieve what I have achieved. I’m going to change my family’s situation and take care of my mother and my siblings. I want to thank God for my mother who raised me and made sure that I got the best education. I also want to thank all the teachers who taught me from primary school to high school. I don’t think I could have achieved this if I didn’t listen to them,” said Seboko.

Seboko was accompanied by his former teacher, Kareli Nthebe who taught him English in grade 11 during the interview. Nthebe told Sedibeng Ster that Seboko’s achievement didn’t come as a surprise to him because he was one of the students who was focused.

“I was not surprised at all when I saw the results because the boy has been a top performer at school and I have no doubt that he is going far with life. I was blessed to be his teacher when he was doing grade 11. I’m humbled to have contributed to his education and I wish him all the best in his new journey. This will serve as motivation to other students that background matters not,” said Nthebe.
