Residents safeguarded from sewage spills
It will safeguard residents from sewage spills during loadshedding.
The Midvaal Local Municipality has embarked on a program to install renewable energy power supply systems (battery storage) at sewer pump stations to ensure uninterrupted pumping during load shedding.
The municipality said in a statement issued last week that it had invested a significant amount of over R1.7 million to install the battery storage system at Adelaar and Leeu Pump Stations in Daleside to protect residents from sewage spillage.
These two pump stations were prioritised due to their high volume of sewage flow and their proximity to the Kliprivier. South Africa has been experiencing an increase in both the severity and frequency of load shedding in recent years.
Consequently, sewage spillage into the environment has occurred, adversely impacting residents around the pump stations, and exposing them to an unhealthy environment.
These sewage discharges are not compliant with South Africa’s Environmental Management Act, thereby prompting the municipality to take preventative and remedial action.
Midvaal Local Municipality says it is working diligently to shield residents from the effects of load shedding and to address challenges through innovation and creativity.
