VEREENIGING. – The Handicapped Scuba Crew recently partnered with Eureka School in giving back to learners and the community.

This was done through a Fun Day at Eureka School where the Handicapped Scuba Crew gave an introductory scuba-diving course that gave participants an opportunity to dive under the watchful eye of highly skilled instructors.

Wayne van Coller from Handicapped Scuba Crew says: “What we do is organise events for schools in order to enable disabled kids to come and try it out. We recently identified Eureka School as one of the schools deserving of this opportunity and we also wanted to put smiles on the kids’ faces.

“We have a few schools where we are already doing this on an annual basis.
“We are committed to accessibility, personal empowerment, social inclusion, and advocacy,” says Van Coller.

The programme is a social community project, which means that the introductory course was offered free of charge to learners and disabled members of the community.

Santie Sauermann from Eureka Skool says: “A lot of our kids overcame their fear today and that is one thing that keeps you back.

“If a person can conquer their fear, they can achieve absolutely anything they want to achieve in this lifetime,” says Sauermann.

The event was not only for the kids in Eureka School, but was open to members of the public who also wanted to have this experience and learn something new.

“This is our way of making an impact in the lives of people who live around us and also making a difference by giving back to our community,” Sauermann said.

The day boasted a fun-packed program and kids also enjoyed a delicious meal from Amigo Spur Steak Ranch in Vaal Mall.

27-Year-Old Brandon Moolman, who scuba-dived for the very first time, said he was happy and appreciated the opportunity. Asked if he would do it again, Moolman said he had lots of fun and would definitely do it again given the opportunity.
