Police sergeant arrested on charges of corruption

Mkaza, who is facing three counts of corruption, was granted bail in the amount of R 5 000 by the Vereeniging Magistrates’ Court in a recent proceeding.

VEREENIGING. – The case against Luyanda Louis Mkaza (44), a police sergeant assigned to the Vehicle Investigations Unit in Vereeniging, has been rescheduled for further investigations and is now set to resume on 31 October 2023.

Mkaza, who is facing three counts of corruption, was granted bail in the amount of R 5 000 by the Vereeniging Magistrates’ Court in a recent proceeding.
According to Lumka Mahanjana, the Regional Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA): “The allegations suggest that on 22 July 2023, the complainant in this case received a distressing call from her husband. He informed her that he had been apprehended for the alleged robbery of a motor vehicle at the Meyerton Police Station. Furthermore, it is claimed that the complainant had a conversation with the investigating officer, who identified himself as Louis Mkaza. In this exchange, he reportedly demanded a payment of R 10 000 to prevent the case from proceeding to court.”
Mahanjana continues, explaining that the complainant managed to raise only R 4 000 from the resources her husband had left behind and met with Mkaza to deliver the payment. She further promised to provide the remaining R 6 000 when her husband appeared in court on 24 July 2023.
However, as the court proceedings continued, and the complainant realised that her husband was not being released, and that the case was repeatedly postponed, she took the responsible step of reporting Mkaza’s actions to the Gauteng Anti-Corruption Unit. Subsequently, Mkaza was apprehended on 27 September 2023 at his workplace.
Following the grant of bail, the case was adjourned until 31 October 2023, as additional investigations are ongoing.
