Illegal recycling plant and dumping site a growing concern

The problem of illegal dumping has been exacerbated by the closure of several official dumping sites in the Emfuleni Local Municipality earlier this year.

VEREENIGING. – Residents in the area between Redan and Rothdene have expressed concern about an illegal recycling plant and dumping site located near the R59, just outside Vereeniging.

This plant has expanded significantly in recent months, stretching from the R59 to the M61.

The problem of illegal dumping has been exacerbated by the closure of several official dumping sites in the Emfuleni Local Municipality earlier this year.

Consequently, residents from various areas, including Arcon Park, Duncanville, Three Rivers, and surrounding communities, have resorted to using this illegal site for disposal.

Residents have raised several issues regarding this site. “In the absence of dumping sites, everyone from Arcon Park, Duncanville, Three Rivers and surrounding areas are now regularly dumping their rubbish in this area,” a frustrated resident of Redan told Ster North.

They complain about the burning of solid waste, which releases unpleasant odours and pollutants into the air. This has led to health concerns, particularly for children and babies.

“They are burning things at the dump every night. I am truly battling to breathe, so I can imagine how babies and children here at Redan are suffering,” a resident told Ster North last week.

Furthermore, the overflowing rubbish has begun to spill onto the R59, negatively impacting the aesthetics of the area.

There is also concern about an increase in makeshift shacks on the site, attracting more recyclers.

Additionally, residents have reported an increase in crime in the area, with fences regularly being damaged, and trespassing becoming more frequent.

Safety concerns have been raised, especially for children attending the neighbouring Springfield Junior Secondary School.

Local authorities have come under scrutiny regarding the issue.

The Midvaal Local Municipality has distanced itself from the illegal dumping site and recycling plant, stating that it falls within the jurisdiction of the Emfuleni Local Municipality.

Midvaal has reportedly approached the Green Scorpions and the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to address the problem and has expressed a commitment to pursuing legal measures to protect the environment and residents’ well-being.

Makhosonke Sangweni, a spokesperson for the Emfuleni Local Municipality, has mentioned that inspections of such hotspots have been conducted. He noted that addressing the issue requires a collaborative effort with law enforcement agencies and Home Affairs.

A clean-up campaign had been planned for August 2023 but was delayed due to reduced fleet capacity.
