"Our commemoration of the Vaal Uprising acknowledges the progress achieved since the era of oppression and turmoil."

SEDIBENG.-  The Sedibeng Region of the African National Congress (ANC) recently observed the commemoration of the historic Vaal Uprising on September 3, 1984.

The party said that the day serves as a reminder of the bravery exhibited by numerous individuals and the collective efforts of the people of the Vaal.

“We pay tribute to the hardships endured and sacrifices made, which paved the way for a united, democratic, non-racial, and non-sexist South Africa,” Jason Mkhwane ANC Regional Secretary said.

In the organization’s, ongoing commitment to honour history and leaders, the ANC Sedibeng recently concluded the Women’s Month with the Inaugural 1st Annual Lecture of Mme Elizabeth Letanta, a struggle activist and one of the organizers of the September 3, 1984, Vaal Uprisings.

The lecture, led by the ANCWL in partnership with the Vaal Heritage Activists Foundation, also commemorated the 63rd birthday of the late Theresa Ramashamole.

Mkhwane said that this event holds immense significance as it brought together two extraordinary women who have left an indelible mark on the history of our region.

“Elizabeth Letanta, a revolutionary and soldier, dedicated her life to fighting oppression and injustice, while Theresa Ramashamole, a symbol of resilience and strength, stood up against the oppressive regime, paying the ultimate price for her beliefs.  While the journey has been arduous, with its fair share of challenges, our unwavering commitment to achieving a prosperous, inclusive, and just society remains steadfast.”
