Ministry of water and sanitation to grace the Vaal on Thursday

The oversight that took place on Tuesday, aimed to detail the Section 63 intervention projects, aimed at addressing sewer spillages.

VAAL TRIANGLE. – The Ministry of Water and Sanitation is set to once again visit the Vaal Triangle on Thursday, 31 August to commission the newly built purification plant.

The plant will be of benefit to Gauteng municipalities as it will add a further 600 milliliters a day by the end of 2023

The delegation will also hand over the Section 63 intervention fleet for operation and maintenance purposes.

This follows an oversight visit led by Minister Senzo Mchunu in Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) and Midvaal Local Municipality (MLM) on Tuesday, 29 August.

The oversight aimed to detail the Section 63 intervention projects, aimed at addressing sewer spillages.

During the visit, Mchunu pointed out that the infrastructure in the Vaal has aged significantly, adding that the problem was not immediately attended to with upgrades and refurbishments.

“The consequence of this is that the pipes could no longer hold, including other infrastructure such as pump stations and Waste treatment plants.”

Mchunu said after being told by Rand Water that a lot of progress had been made, he had to come and verify that progress had been made.

The day ensued at Rothdene Pump Station, which transfers wastewater to Meyerton Waste Water Treatment Works. The plant services Meyerton, Henley on Klip, and Rothdene.

The pump station was handed over by Rand Water and DWS to MLM on 3 August 2018.

Mchunu continued the inspection of pump stations 8, 9, and 10 which are being refurbished.

According to the ministry, the pumps are at near completion with pump stations 8 and 10 standing at just about 90% completion.

“I saw something completely different from what I saw when the intervention was starting, I can indeed confirm that a lot of progress has been made,” Mchunu said.
