Emfuleni cancels expensive workshop after pressure from FF Plus

This after the municipality had planned a workshop for 13 and 14 March at the Lakefield Conference Center in Benoni next to the OR Tambo Airport. The workshop included overnight facilities.

The Emfuleni local municipality (Evaton, Sebokeng, Vaal Oewer, Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging) has meanwhile moved its planned expensive and luxurious workshop for the integrated development plan (IGP) to a cheaper venue after pressure from the FF Plus.

In a statement FF Plus board member Gerda Senekal said that FF Plus had written to the municipal manager, April Ntuli, demanding that the planned workshop be abolished due to Emfuleni’s already dire financial situation.

Letters about this have also been addressed to the Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Government and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Mzi Khumalo, and the MEC for Treasury, Jacob Mamabola.

The FF Plus suggested that the workshop be moved to the Vereeniging banquet hall to save costs. It is therefore not essential for the 110 council members and officials to make use of overnight facilities.

“The ANC cannot plan luxury workshops while the Emfuleni municipality cannot pay its staff, fulfil its bulk obligations to Eskom and Rand water and service delivery is completely scaled down.

“The FF Plus keeps a watchful eye on the ANC-controlled Emfuleni municipality and will not hesitate to raise its voice to stop ill-considered decisions,” said Senekal said.
